About Valerie Joyner

Valerie Joyner was born and raised in Washington, DC. She studied Journalism and Criminology at the University of Maryland in College Park. After graduating, Valerie worked for The Washington Times newspaper before moving to Los Angeles, California where she began her career in television. She worked on The Wayan’s Brothers, In Living Color and The Jamie Foxx Show. Inspired by her new environment, Valerie started exploring creative writing. She penned a pilot, a film script and her first novel.

While she enjoyed working in television and valued the experience, life would lead her back to the east coast. In New York she embraced her journalism background and began writing freelance articles for DNR and Next, Conde Nast Publications while working at Black Enterprise Magazine.

Valerie enrolled in creative writing classes and became a part of a nurturing writing community. Drawing upon the many days spent in production offices at Warner Bros, Valerie wrote her second novel, Hollyhood. Published by Avon Books, Harper Collins in 2009 Hollyhood is the behind the scene story of a hit sitcom. In this story Valerie cleverly gives her readers an insider’s view of Hollywood.

While Valerie was honing her writing skills, she maintained employment at Fortune 500 companies, Pfizer, Inc and Johnson & Johnson to support herself. Valerie recently returned to sunny Los Angeles, California, where she is working on her third novel, penning spec scripts and blogging.
