Hollywood Goddam!

Every so often a biopic role of a lifetime comes along and if properly executed can change the trajectory of an actors career and we forever see them as that character. Think Jamie Fox as Ray Charles, Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, Denzel Washington as Malcolm X. Halle Berry as Dorothy Dandridge. (I know, I’m stretching it here.) Diana Ross as Billie Holiday. Ben Kingsley as Ghandi, Liam Neeson as Schindler. I won’t bore you longer. You get the point.

Zoe, Zoe, Zoe Saldana. I know why you’d wanted to play Nine Simone. Ms. Simone was a legendary performer, vocalist, pianist, songwriter, activist and overall badass. Her life was filled with peaks and valleys, joy and lots of pain. I mean, Mississippi Goddam. This was a juicy role. Zoe wanted her shot and the chance to spread her wings, flex her range. But Hollywood Goddamn. You can’t take whatever they dangle in front of you.

It's alarming that Hollywood is not even casting black women in the roles of black women. It’s nothing personal against Zoe. I’m a fan. However, most biopics are successful due to a strong resemblance to the character. Zoe does not look authentic. The fact that she doesn’t even have kinky hair deeply disturbs me. Well, her hair is probably considered kinky by Dominican standards. The fact that they obviously darkened her skin with make up is worse. I mean, three days on a Cancun beach and I look like a coon. Doesn't she tan?

I won’t name name’s, but a Puerto Rican actor once said to me, I won’t take a role from a black actor.” This was after passing on a role in a “black film.” Wise words from a person who knows the business, respects other actors and has integrity about her work.

If only Zoe had the good sense to do the same. If only she had mentors. If only. If only…..cause Zoe is going to catch all kinds of hell over this. And might I add, the director should get some backlash as well. After all, she was the ass who convinced her she could sell this role. She must have skipped her meds that day. Black people are not going to buy this.

First a white guy is cast as Michael Jackson. Now this. SMH. Hollywood Goddamn!

While I am disappointed at the decision to cast Zoe Saldana-I wish I could say I'm surprised-but I'm not. With a budget of $7,000,000 (which everyone knows is next to nothing to make a movie these days) calculated risks & commercial choices abound....
